Wrinkle injections are not a face-lift. They are a maintenance treatment that softens the lines repeated facial movement has carved into your skin over the years. When the right product is placed in the right muscle by someone who actually understands the anatomy, the result is a face that looks rested, not done. That is what people mean when they say someone “looks great” but cannot quite figure out why.
This page walks through what wrinkle injections actually do, the products used in Canada, what realistic results look like for women in their 30s, 40s, and 50s, and how the process works at Kontour Medical Aesthetics in London, Ontario.
The lines we call “wrinkles” come from two different sources. Some are dynamic, meaning they appear when you move your face: forehead lines when you raise your eyebrows, frown lines between your brows, crow’s feet when you smile. Some are static, meaning they sit on your skin even when your face is at rest.
Wrinkle injections work on dynamic lines first. The active ingredient is a neuromodulator that temporarily reduces signal between the nerve and the small muscles under the skin. When those muscles contract less, the skin above them creases less. Over months and years, less creasing means less etching, which means fewer static lines forming.
This is why people who start treatment in their 30s often look noticeably smoother in their 40s than peers who started later. The wrinkle injection did not erase years. It prevented years of repeated creasing from carving in.
Three neuromodulators are commonly used in Canadian medical aesthetics clinics: Botox Cosmetic, Dysport, and Nuceiva. They share the same core mechanism but differ slightly in onset speed, spread pattern, and how they are dosed.
A trained injector chooses the product based on the area being treated, your previous response to neuromodulators, and what kind of result you are after. The product matters less than the person holding the syringe. A skilled injector with Dysport will produce a better outcome than an inexperienced one with Botox.
The most common mistake clients make is expecting a wrinkle injection to do the work of a filler, a laser, or a face-lift. It cannot.
Here is what a wrinkle injection can do well:

Many clients in their 40s are best served by a combination plan: wrinkle injections for the upper face, dermal filler for volume restoration in the cheeks or temples, and a skincare and laser plan for tone and texture. We talk through the options at consultation.
Every new client starts with an assessment. This is not a sales appointment. It is a clinical conversation where we look at your face under proper lighting, ask what bothers you, ask what you have already tried, and lay out a realistic plan.
If wrinkle injections are part of that plan, the actual treatment is short. Most appointments take 15 to 20 minutes. The needles used are very fine. Most clients describe the sensation as a quick pinch.
You can return to work the same day. There is no visible downtime in most cases, though we recommend avoiding strenuous exercise, lying flat, and facial massage for the rest of the day so the product settles where we placed it.
You will start to notice softening within three to five days. Full results settle in around day fourteen, which is when we book a complimentary follow-up to assess and adjust if needed.
For most people, results last about three to four months on the first treatment. With consistent treatment over a year or two, many clients find their next session can wait longer because the treated muscles have weakened from reduced use.
Stopping treatment does not make your wrinkles worse. Your face simply returns to where it would have been if you had never started. The “rebound aging” myth has been studied and disproven. What changes is the comparison: a face that has been getting consistent treatment for five years will look smoother than the same face if it had not, but neither face is being made worse by the product.
Not everyone is a good candidate, and we say no when we mean no. Wrinkle injections are not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. They are also not the right starting point for clients in their 20s with no visible dynamic lines, despite the marketing push for “preventative Botox” in that age group.
The strongest signal that a wrinkle injection will help is a line that visibly softens when you stop making the expression. If the line is still there at full rest, the issue is more skin texture than muscle movement, and a different treatment will give you a better result.
If you have questions specific to your face, the answer is one short consultation away. We will look at your skin, walk through the realistic options, and explain costs in writing before you commit to anything. No pressure to book a treatment the same day.
